Upright meaning

Upright, Temperance is the art of combination. Two temperatures, two jobs, two truths about a relationship, two medicines that seemed to cancel each other: the angel’s work is to pour until a third thing appears. This is Sagittarius fire in the correspondences—aim, pilgrimage, a philosophy that has to travel—tempered by water at the foot.

When the card is well placed, you are not being asked to become bland. You are being asked to stop swinging. A sustainable cadence, a repair that includes pacing, a practice you can repeat: these are Temperance victories. They rarely photograph well. They keep people alive.

Reversed meaning

History of the image: Temperance in older decks was often a woman pouring, a virtue among virtues.
