Upright meaning

Upright, the Lovers asks you to stand in a choice rather than hover above it. The choice may be a person. It may be a value. It may be the way two parts of your own life have been living in different climates. Alignment is the word that keeps the card from collapsing into “romance plot.”

Waite’s Eden is not a fairy tale about being completed by another. It is a picture of knowledge that changes you once you take it. When this card is well placed, you are being asked to love in a way that includes your mind and your morals, not only your appetite. That is harder, and more durable, than infatuation.

A mountain rises between the pair: the work that outlasts infatuation.

The angel’s hands are spread over both figures. Guidance is pictured as available, not as a puppeteer. History of the image matters because popular reading still hears “soulmate” and stops. Waite wrote of the card as the idea of love and of choice in the higher sense. The nakedness is honesty, not merely erotic display. When you read it, look at the mountain as much as at the couple.
